Description
VW T4 Camper, short wheelbase.
2.5 TDI, ACV engine, 5 speed manual.
Built, Not Bought – £2,750 ONO
Meet our very yellow VW camper van. You will never lose it in a car park, and nobody will ever be able to claim they “didn’t see you coming”.
This is very much a built, not bought camper. It has been put together, adapted, used, enjoyed and well loved over the years. It is not a pristine showroom conversion with matching scatter cushions and an Instagram account. It is an honest, characterful camper that now needs somebody with the time and enthusiasm to give it its next chapter.
Unfortunately, we simply aren’t using it enough anymore, so it seems unfair to leave it sitting around looking cheerful.
The good stuff:
It has a strong-running 2.5 TDI, ACV diesel engine and has covered approximately 231,342 miles. That is a lot of miles, but it is a diesel VW van rather than a lightly used shopping trolley.
The camper conversion includes:
• Professionally fitted SMEV gas hob and sink combo with electric tap.
• 3 way fridge. Gas, 240volt, 12 volt.
• Eberspacher diesel heater plumbed into the vehicle fuel tank pick up.
• EU-compliant 3/4 width, leather-effect rock-and-roll bed, M1/pull tested and bolted through the floor on spreader plates with x2 seat belts.
• Front passenger captain’s seat on FASP swivel base.
• Gear lever extender with yellow gear knob.
• Van X curtains on side window, sliding door and between cab and living area.
• Wind deflectors.
• Conventional camper kitchen and cupboard layout, extra storage above kitchen area.
• Leisure battery and split charge relay with heavy duty cable and fuses at both ends, voltmeter for vehicle and leisure battery.
• 240 hook up, plug hidden behind dummy fog light.
• 2000 watt inverter.
• USB sockets x2, 12volt socket x1.
• Seperate lighting above sliding door, kitchen and living areas, plus 2 flexible reading lamps.
• Table with folding leg clips to rail.
• Rear barn doors.
• Fiamma wind out side awning.
• Extremely cheerful yellow paintwork.
• Comic-book styling inside, because beige was never really an option
The rock-and-roll bed allows the rear to be used as proper travelling seats before folding down into a bed. The diesel heater also means camping does not have to be limited to the three reliably warm evenings Britain gets each year.
The honest bit:
The van currently has no MOT and is being sold as a project.
The engine starts and runs, but its most recent MOT identified the following major defects:
• Supplementary restraint system warning light indicating a fault
• Emissions test could not be completed because of excessive smoke
• Offside front brake pipe excessively corroded
• Service brake efficiency below requirements
The advisories were:
• Play in the steering rack inner joints
• Some corrosion to the vehicle structure, although structural rigidity was not significantly reduced
• Front and rear brake discs worn, pitted or scored
• Subframe corrosion, but not seriously weakened
• Nearside and offside front brake hoses slightly deteriorated
We have been advised that the repairs are likely to cost around £1,200, although any buyer should carry out their own inspection and make their own assessment. Older vans occasionally enjoy surprising people, so we would rather be completely upfront than pretend it only needs a bulb and a positive attitude.
Who is it for?
This would suit somebody looking for:
• A camper project they can improve and personalise
• A capable VW diesel van with a completed conversion
• A weekend camper without the price tag of a polished professional build
• Something bright enough to be visible from space
It has plenty of signs of age and use, including cosmetic wear and minor corrosion, so please study the photographs carefully. It is not being advertised as immaculate, but it has loads of personality and the main camper features are already in place.
Price
£2,750 ONO
We have priced it to reflect the lack of MOT, mileage and repairs required, while also taking account of the camper conversion, rock-and-roll bed, hob, sink, diesel heater and desirable barn-door layout.
Have included photos of the dink (blaming a tiny car park in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands) – and some rust spots so you can see exactly what you’re getting but these aren’t anything more than cosmetic.
Sensible offers are welcome. Ridiculous offers may be printed out and used to light the gas hob.
Collection will need to be arranged by trailer or similar because the van has no current MOT.
Please feel free to ask any questions.
Viewing is welcome, and we are happy for serious buyers to inspect it properly before agreeing a sale.
Thanks for looking.
