This campervan is absolutely unique and special. It is a one-off and is the centre of attention everywhere it goes. It was designed as a passion project. We’ve had great fun using the camper for local trips this summer and it is now time to pass her onto a new owner.
The conversion was carried out professionally in May 2023 and has had light use since then. It will be sold with a fresh MOT and service.
It has 31708 miles on the clock! (that’s 50115km).
It would work well as a camper, a liveaboard, or for glamping purposes for a business.
HISTORY OF THE VAN
We bought this van from an importer in the spring of 2022. It’s an ex-German military Red Cross ambulance. Having only clocked up 28,000 miles in its time as a serving ambulance, the vehicle still has all of its original paintwork and even came with original features, including a first aid kit.
The van has the “Million Mile” engine MO616, considered to be one of the most reliable engines ever produced.
INTERIOR STYLING
The cupboard fronts and lining are of birch ply, in a style inspired by classic boats. The camper contains a rear fixed bed, a lower bed that can also be used as a child’s den, and a garage for bikes and camping gear. There is also an extra storage area with further security at the rear. There is a comfy and spacious lounge area with a dining table, towards the front of the van.
The van has two factory sun-roofs.
There are high cupboards along the length of the van as well as further cupboard space in the kitchen area and under the sink.
The kitchen has a set-up for a retro coffee machine. The van has a Thetford oven, grill and three-burner hob, a designer Lily coffee maker, a large fridge freezer and an external gas hook-up for a BBQ.
The kitchen has a feature copper-coloured sink and oak worktops, including an extra pull-out worktop extension. The cabinetry is made from lightweight poplar ply carcasses and hard-wearing birch ply frontage, while the dining area is also made using birch ply and oak.
The van has a powerful sound deadening lining as well as vapour barrier and insulation in thermafleece, a natural fibre insulation made from sheep’s wool and recycled fibres.
The campervan has 800w of solar panel for the leisure system, plus an additional solar panel for the starter battery. It has two lithium batteries of 340 amp in total. It has a 2400kw victron inverter, enabling charging of electric bikes, laptops, a coffee maker and even a fan, completely off-grid. The van has versatile lighting and numerous usb charging ports.
The van has an inbuilt powerful sound system with seven speakers including sub-woofers.
There is a hot shower from the rear of the van (the hot water can also be powered off-grid from the inverter), which you could use together with a shower tent if you want some privacy at a festival! It can also be used for cleaning muddy boots, dogs and for outdoor showering at any time of the year.
There is a hidden portaloo inside one of the seats in the lounge area behind the front seats. This could be removed and placed inside a toilet tent if you are camping for a period of time.
The flooring is in hard-wearing commercial grade Forbo linoleum and the upholstery is in a stylish grey fabric.

Conversion Description
VINTAGE AMBULANCE
This bespoke camper conversion breathes new life into a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 507D, a vehicle with a rather heroic past. Originally a German ex-military Red Cross ambulance, it spent the vast majority of its life safely stored indoors. Consequently, it arrived for conversion in remarkable condition with only 28,000 miles on the odometer and its original paintwork perfectly preserved.
Under the bonnet lies the legendary OM616 “million-mile” engine. Known for its bulletproof reliability, this engine is a favourite for those interested in sustainability, as it can be easily adapted to run on alternative fuels like waste vegetable oil. To keep the vehicle’s history alive, several original features—including the vintage heater and first aid kit—were retained during the build.
DESIGN LAYOUT
The interior was conceptualised as a “testing ground” for innovative design ideas, balancing the ruggedness of a military vehicle with the warmth of a high-end home. The layout was specifically engineered to accommodate both comfortable living and bulky outdoor gear like bicycles and electric skateboards.
SLEEPING & STORAGE
Sleeping: A fixed main bed sits at the back, with a clever children’s bunk tucked directly below. This lower space features its own lighting and curtains, allowing it to double as a private play den.
Gear Garage: Integrated beneath the sleeping area is a heavy-duty metal locker designed for securing valuable equipment, along with a dedicated bay for an electric bike.
LIVING & DINING
The central living area features a handcrafted dinette made from birch plywood and oak, with twin benches surrounding a central table. For a clean, minimalist aesthetic, a portable toilet is tucked away out of sight beneath one of the benches.
THE KITCHEN
The galley is a standout feature, combining rustic materials with modern appliances:
Worktops: Solid, durable oak throughout.
Appliances: A Thetford oven, grill, and three-burner hob, paired with a Dometic fridge.
Details: A stylish copper-coloured sink with a dedicated cutlery drawer and a built-in coffee maker.
OFF-GRID CAPABILITY
Built for true independence, the camper is fully insulated with Thermafleece to handle varying climates. The electrical system is powered by a high-capacity lithium battery and supplemented by roof-mounted solar panels, ensuring that the adventure doesn’t have to stop when the pavement ends.
